This week I began a project of upgrading the RAM in my Acer Aspire One netbook from 1GB to 2GB. It’s always a challenge to find information on upgrades that are not necessarily sanctioned by the manufacturer. When doing upgrades like this, I’ve found it is helpful to do a search on YouTube, because you can usually find a tutorial that will explain how to disassemble what you’re trying to upgrade.
For this newer Aspire One, it requires a significant amount of disassembling to get to the RAM card slot. A YouTube video that shows the procedure can be found here.
Removing the keyboard is the most difficult task. I found it worked best to start from the center top above the F8 key. You need a very thin tool to place between the keyboard and the netbook body. I found that a one-sided razor blade worked well. Try not to bend the keyboard too much while working either side to the F4 and F12 keys, then to the Del and Esc keys. On my netbook, the latch near the Esc key was stuck and would not retract. I used an small knife to cut the tab, allowing the keyboard to pop up. There are tabs near the Tab key and the |\ key, which do not retract. Once the keyboard was free of the upper tabs, I was able to turn the keyboard slightly counter-clockwise and it eventually came free. Once the keyboard is free, be careful with the ribbon cable on the lower back of the keyboard because it is very short.
After the 4 screws at the points marked “door” are removed, I recommend just setting them in a safe place. I did not replace them when I reassembled my netbook. The back cover snaps into place, so there is really no need to replace the door screws unless you really want to.
The safest next step after removing the door screws is to replace the keyboard by snapping it back into place. When the keyboard is in place, close the screen, turn the netbook over and then pry out the 2 rubber feet that are farthest from the battery compartment. This leaves a hole on either side and you can pry off the back using these holes and a small bladed screwdriver.
When replacing the memory card, make sure it is seated all the way in when you install it at the 45 degree angle. The first time I re-installed the card, the netbook would not boot. The power light came on and the hard disk spun up briefly and then there was nothing. Once I reseated the original memory card, it booted up with no problem.
I tried to install a generic 2GB card, which did not work. I don’t know if the memory card is bad. But, since it was so inexpensive, I decided to buy a Kingston memory card, which matches the brand that is currently in the netbook. Once I receive the Kingston card, I will update this article with the results.
Update: I received the Kingston memory card and installed it into my netbook. What a relief to push the power button and have the netbook come to life! I pressed F2 when the screen came alive just to check the BIOS to ensure the 2GB of RAM was recognized. Seeing it there, I exited the BIOS screen and let it boot into Windows. The netbook certainly seems a little more peppy than it was before. For anyone considering this upgrade, the memory I bought was the Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 1333MHz PC3-1066 DDR3 SO-DIMM Notebook Memory (KVR1333D3S9/2GETR) which was available through Amazon.com.
