The Hotel American Dinesen is located on the south side of the Grand Canal, a short distance east of the Accademia Bridge. I chose this hotel for my stay in Venice because of the good reviews I read on the Internet and because it was not real close to the Piazza San Marco. Venice can be a very busy place in the summer, and the Piazza San Marco seems to be the main gathering place for all the tourists visiting the city. For your first stay in Venice, you might want to stay at a hotel that is closer to the action than Hotel American. Hotel American was my hotel at the end of my stay in Venice and it was a perfect choice.
This hotel has its own dock on the canal in front. It was easy to take a water taxi right to the hotel front door. The normal check-in time is 2:00 PM for this hotel. I arrived at 11:00 AM after fighting crowds at the end of a trip on a cruise ship. It was a welcomed surprise when the hotel staff advised me that my room was available and I could check-in immediately.
The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. I was given a map, provided with suggestions of sights to see, offered access to concert tickets, and offered restaurant recommendations. And, after all that, the staff brought my luggage to my room and explained all the room features before handing over the key. The greeting I received at this hotel was very impressive.
The room I had was a superior canal view room. The room had 3 balconies, 2 facing the canal adjacent to the hotel, and a third facing toward the Grand Canal. The bathroom was small, but nicely appointed. The bed was very firm. So, if you like a firm bed, you’ll be quite happy. It seems like firm beds are common in Venice, because the beds were firm at all 3 hotels I visited while in Venice. I also found the pillows were a little too firm for me. I didn’t think to ask if they had softer pillows.
My room included a complementary continental breakfast in the morning. There was a nice selection of fresh fruit, yogurt, croissants, and juices. There is a machine for making cappuccino, espresso, American-style coffee, and hot chocolate.
One really great feature at this hotel is the free wifi Internet access. When you check in, you are provided with the access password. The Internet connection was very strong in my room and it worked well during my stay.
On the day I checked out, I had an afternoon transfer scheduled to go to the airport. Since checkout time is 11:00 AM, that left some additional time to spend walking around Venice. The hotel stored my luggage after I checked out. When I returned to make my transfer to the airport, the hotel staff brought my luggage out to the dock and offered the use of their restroom. This is helpful because there are not many public restrooms around the city and the ones that are there are usually crowded and not very clean. The staff seems to be very good at anticipating your needs before you even ask.
Two thumbs up for the Hotel American. I’m confident a stay there will not disappoint.
