Part of my morning routine is to read the news headlines. I don’t know why I do it. It’s just a habit. I do want to know what’s going on in the world, but there a number of stories each day that I would prefer not to have seen.
Such was the case this morning. USA Today had a story today titled From Russia with love – for Trump. There is not a single western leader who has welcomed the fact that Donald Trump was elected to be President of the United States. It is a different story in Russia. Vladimir Putin, it seems, will be fast friends with the president-elect, and apparently the Russian people are liking Trump as well. Trump’s public support in Russia is probably due to the state-controlled media in that country.
It occurred to me that there was a time in this country when any mention of a communist country, like the Soviet Union, was disgusting to the white majority of the United States. You would be looked at with disdain if you said anything positive about the communists. I’ll grant you that Russia isn’t really considered a communist country anymore, but there is little difference between the Russia of today and the former Soviet Union.
Today is a completely different story. The white majority in this country see nothing wrong with the fact that their president-elect has been spoken highly of by only one world leader, the leader of Russia. Donald Trump, in the past, has also praised the dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong-il. Thirty years ago, Donald Trump would have been shouted down for his support of Kim and Putin. Apparently, the white majority thinks that communism is okie-dokie now. Yes, times have certainly changed.
