Livorno, Italy to Villefranche, France
July 15-17, 2018
Day 1 – Sunday, July 15, 2018
I have enjoyed my stay in Florence. I had planned to depart about a week ago, but the winds were very light and I thought I could wait for better conditions. Last night, I decided I had waited long enough. I planned my departure for this morning. I had also planned to make a stop at Genoa, but because of my extended stay in Florence, I decided to head directly to Nice, France.
At 6:40 AM, I left the dock, raised my sails and headed west out of the harbor. The wind was blowing only about 4 knots from the south-southeast. Since I have only about 130 nm to Villefranche, the light wind should not be a problem. This is especially true since I’ve been in port for so long.
Day 2 – Monday, July 16, 2018
07/16/2018 0507 UTC – 43º 38.82′ N 8º 43.17′ E
Although it was not very far to Villefranche from Livorno, only a little over 100 nm, it is taking me an extended period of time to make this voyage. The wind had been blowing mostly from the direction I need to sail and the wind speeds have been barely 5 knots at times. What is nice is the weather and the seas. Considering some of my longer passages, this is still a piece of cake.
Day 3 – Tuesday, July 17, 2018
When I awoke this morning, I was still about 45 nm southeast of Villefranche. The wind speed is under 4 knots and it looks like it will take the better part of the day to make it there. The weather is still beautiful. It’s another great day for sailing.

At about 6:00 PM, I rounded Pointe Causinière and headed north into the harbor at Villefranche. At 6:28 PM, I dropped the sails and dropped anchor just off Plage de Passable. I am looking forward to a wonderful stay in Nice, France.
